    Lenovo exempted from export check

    Wednesday, July 02, 2008; Posted: 04:45 AM

Lenovo Group (0992.HK; LNVGY.PK), the world's fourth largest PC manufacturer, has acquired the qualification for exemption from export check from China's quality inspection administration. It is the first PC producer granted such qualification.
It is learned that exemption of quality inspection will cover export of five serial PC products under the dual brand of Lenovo and Think that are produced by the company's plants in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Huiyang.

The qualification, the highest credit rating on export product in China, is set to provide more relaxed export environment for Lenovo and give more competitive edges to the company.

    Lenovo unveils special desktop PC

    July 03, 2008

World's third largest PC vendor Lenovo Group yesterday announced a strategic partnership with e-business giant Alibaba and chipmaker Intel to tap the burgeoning e-commerce market.

The move is expected to help Lenovo gain more market share from competitors. As the first step to mark the partnership, Lenovo will launch a tailor-made desktop PC product targeting e-commerce for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in September, according to Xia Li, vice-president of Lenovo.

The special desktop will embed Alibaba's platform, Winport, allowing users to access e-commerce business efficiently and easily, according to Xia.

"We found that one reason for SMEs' reluctance in developing e-commerce is a lack of knowledge in the area, and our product will go a long way in helping them," said Xia.

Less than 1 percent of China's 42 million SMEs are developing e-business, but the market has witnessed rapid growth in recent years, with a total of over 2,000 players in this sector now.

Xia declined to forecast the number of e-commerce PC shipment this year. "It is hard to forecast as it is a new product and we will get only four months this year for sales."

Cheng Hong, an analyst with CCID Consulting Co, an IT consulting firm, said: "Lenovo will find a new niche market and a new business model by launching the e-commerce desktop PC. It will boost its corporate sales in the long run." But Xia said the product will not replace its Yangtian Series, Lenovo's flagship desktop PC, for corporate customers.

Shipment of Yangtian Series last year hit 1.6 million units, and the number could jump 25 percent to 2 million units in 2008, according to Xia.

Total shipment of Lenovo's PC products hit 10.61 million units, capturing 28.1 percent market share and making Lenovo the largest PC vendor in China in 2007, according to IDC, a leading provider of global IT research and consultancy.

"We are encouraged by the alliance with Lenovo as the move will accelerate our pace of providing one-stop services to SME e-commerce," said Wei Zhe, CEO of Alibaba, China's leading e-commerce portal.

Alibaba, along with Intel, launched a special program, "Powering China", in May to help SMEs develop their business by using e-commerce tools. More players will join the program in the coming days, according to Wei.

After the launch of this desktop, Lenovo is scheduled to introduce new e-commerce models in its product line of notebooks and accessories, a move that will allow Lenovo provide one-stop solution for different customers.

On whether the product will be extended to the overseas market, Xia said: "That is on our agenda. The product could be introduced in markets like Russia. But that depends on whether Alibaba will extend its business to these areas."

    Anders kan je kiezen tussen

    In de USA via ADR's
    finance.yahoo.com/q?s=LNVGY.PK

    Of via Frankfurt

Lenovo has appointed Dicker Data as its fourth distributor in the Australian market. It joins Ingram Micro, which has access to the vendor's entire range, as well as Synnex and Cellnet, which carry everything except workstations.

Dicker will have stock as of July 28, according to its sales manager, Chris Price. He said the two companies had been discussing a partnership for the past 18 months and hinted that Dicker would like to add more new partnerships.

"Lenovo represent an incremental addition to our business. We've got the capacity and it's a good time for us to be taking on new vendors," he said. "We've got no software vendors of note, which is an area we're considering, and we're limited to HP with enterprise servers but are looking at expanding there."

Lenovo's small business and consumer director, David Nicol, said the appointment of Dicker Data fitted with plans to target the SMB market.

"The geographical focus [NSW] and end-user focus [SMB] fit with our company well, and complements our existing distributors. We want to grow, and we've got a big opportunity at the moment," he said.

While insisting the Lenovo deal would not impact its relationship with other suppliers, Price said the distributor was looking to terminate one of its current vendor contracts but declined to elaborate. Dicker's other vendors are Canon, Epson, HP, Kingston, LG, NEC, Netgear, Targus and Toshiba.

LG national IT channel manager, Charlie Harb, denied the Lenovo announcement partnership would affect its relationship with Dicker Data.

NEC regional director, Tim Falinski, declined to comment on how its relationship with Dicker Data would be affected but said there had been no discussions about parting company.

$0 stock trades. 10 free per month.HANGZHOU, China, July 9 (Reuters) - Legend Capital, an investment arm of China's Legend Group, said on Wednesday it has raised $400 million for a new private equity fund which will be invested mostly in the technology, media and telecoms sectors.

Legend Group, which owns China's top PC maker Lenovo Group Ltd (0992.HK: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), has invested about $160 million in the new fund, or 40 percent of the total, Legend Capital Managing Director Chen Hao said.

The fund, the fourth of a series of private equity funds managed by Legend Capital, is also its biggest, with the three others worth about $400 million combined, Chen told reporters on the sidelines of an industry forum.

"We completed the fund-raising for the new fund with no difficulties as our limited partners' interest in investing in China is still quite great," said Chen.

Chen said Legend Capital's three previous funds had invested in about 70 projects and he expected to complete investments by the new fund within two years.

Its portfolio included Chinese online book store Joyo.com, which was acquired by Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), as well as Nasdaq-listed Solarfun Power Holdings Co (SOLF.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) and Spreadtrum Communications Inc (SPRD.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), according to its website (www.legendcapital.com.cn).

About 60 to 70 percent of the new fund will be invested in China's technology, media and telecoms sectors, while 20 to 30 percent will be invested in consumer-related sectors, Chen said.

Legend Capital is in talks with domestic partners to set up a yuan-denominated private equity fund, which would be subject to regulatory approvals, Chen said, although he gave no further details. (Reporting by George Chen and Helen Ding; Editing by Edmund Klamann

    Interview: Lenovo’s Strategic Sales Move
Posted by Rob Enderle on July 8, 2008 at 10:46 am

In North America, this is likely going to be a tough year for anyone selling just about anything into the U.S., because both companies and consumers will have fewer dollars to spend. What consumers and IT buyers are likely to favor is anything that saves them money.

On the consumer side, another potential benefit to the PC segment is that while people are cutting back on travel and driving, they seem to be increasing their use of the Web for entertainment and communication. This would mean that messaging that surrounded increased entertainment value and power conservation would resonate with consumers. For IT, a broader expense-reducing argument should shift buying behavior. Dell, HP and Lenovo are all solidly on the conservation path but Lenovo did something a little different. It put a finance guy in to run sales.

    The Power of “Leveling”

Back when I took my own sales training, one of the lessons that stuck with me was the power of “leveling.” This is where you match the demeanor, background, and skill set of the person doing the selling with the person they are selling to. Increasingly this year and moving into the next, the person you are really selling in an IT purchase is the CFO, who is desperately looking for ways to spend money intelligently to improve his corporation’s bottom-line performance. This means he or she is focused solidly on economic benefits. This doesn’t mean that green and other initiatives won’t be important, but compared to saving money in a hard year, they will likely be less critical in North America.

Given this problem, the best person to craft the sales messaging, help create training programs, and personally close large enterprise business would be someone with a strong accounting background. Someone who is used to talking to CFOs in their own language so that the message had the highest probability of resonating.

And that is exactly who, six months ago, Lenovo put in to head its Americas sales organization.

    My Interview with Scott

I spent this morning chatting with Scott DiValerio, the senior vice president and president of the Lenovo Americas group. I had met him years earlier during my quarterly finance calls with Microsoft when he was the corporate vice president of finance and administration and chief accounting officer. I think few can argue that from an accounting standpoint, Microsoft has historically been very well run. Prior to Microsoft, Scott had worked at The Walt Disney Company, one of the best-run companies in the world, and spent around 15 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he would have come into contact with CFOs globally.

For the last six months, Scott has been systematically improving the efficiency of Lenovo’s sales organization, which you would expect from someone with his background. He has brought in heavy hitters from AMD and Sony/Ericsson to improve both corporate and consumer efforts. In chatting with Scott, who questioned me about my outlook for the coming months as much as I questioned him, it struck me that he was in an ideal place and that Bill Amelio, Lenovo’s ex-Dell CEO, has shown incredible insight by choosing someone who has a finance background to run a unit that will be selling mostly on a finance message for the next couple of years.

In hard times like the ones that North America is in, traditional sales organizations can get into trouble because they over-aggressively try to game the incentive system and/or bypass company policy to record unprofitable deals or make promises the company doesn’t agree with and can’t stand behind. Sales typically lives from quarter to quarter, but to address a problem like the one we currently have, the solution needs to be strategic; tactical rule bending can create catastrophic problems for the vendor and the customer.

    Wrapping Up

In the end, Scott came across as capable and uniquely qualified to address both the leveling opportunity and prevent the normal misbehavior that often occurs inside sales organizations at times like these. I remain impressed with Bill Amelio’s strategic moves.

However, Yang did not disclose any potential target.

"For the time being, it is just an intention," said Lenovo spokesman Zhu Guang.

FSC beschäftigt rund 10.500 Mitarbeiter, davon 6200 in Deutschland.
