   Nieuwe Saab gaat in zee met BMW
   
   Zelf houden ze de lippen vooralsnog stijf op elkaar. Maar het lijkt nu toch wel zeker dat Saab zo'n drie maanden na de herstart al belangrijke stappen neemt om zich los te weken van de techniek van GM.
   
   Topman Victor Muller wil kennelijk snel schakelen. Een aantal signalen - zoals bezoeken van het management aan München - wijst erop dat de Nederlands-Zweedse autobouwer een partnerschap aangaat met BMW. Het ligt voor de hand dat de aandacht zich na een eerste stap op het gebied van componenten zou kunnen richten op motoren, transmissies en milieutechniek van het Duitse premiummerk. Ook de gedachte van een samenwerking op het gebied van de kleine Saab dringt zich op. Maar met name voor de benzinekrachtbronnen zou Saab, zo geeft technische topman Mats Fagerhag al wel toe, liever andere oplossingen kiezen.
   Tijdens de presentatie van het nieuwe Saab 9-5 vlaggenschip in Trollhättan meldde Victor Muller dat het technische ‘vangnet' van de voormalige eigenaar nog vele jaren beschikbaar is. "Als we het willen, kunnen we tot 2024 op GM rekenen, eventueel dus zelfs nog voor de volgende generatie van de 9-5 bijvoorbeeld. Maar het grote verschil met voorheen is dat Saab nu zelf de keuzes maakt." Alle signalen wijzen erop dat Saab dat daadwerkelijk op korte termijn zal doen door andere wegen in te slaan. Niet in de laatste plaats om het ooit zo sterke imago als merk met een uniek eigen karakter zo snel mogelijk weer op te bouwen. Muller zei het tijdens de lancering van de 9-5 tamelijk plastisch: "Mensen zien Saab nu veel te veel als een soort upmarket Opel."
   
   De 9-5 werd nog vrijwel geheel in de GM-ontwikkelingsafdeling ontwikkeld, opvallend genoeg onder leiding van dezelfde Mats Fagerhag en die heeft inmiddels dus de transfer naar Zweden gemaakt. Zijn eerstvolgende project is de nieuwe generatie van de 9-3. Die zal volgens hem en Victor Muller veel meer Saab-achtig worden. De auto wordt in 2012 gelanceerd.
   
   Muller onderstreept dat grote kostbare projecten, zoals de ontwikkeling van de kleine Saab, alleen binnen een partnerschap mogelijk zijn. "Een 92 staat hoog op onze verlanglijst. Dat zal geen retro-model worden, trouwens. Maar juist heel vooruitstrevend." Wat daarbij volgens Fagerhag erg kan helpen, is het feit dat grote toeleveranciers belangstelling hebben om Saab als een soort testbank voor nieuwe technieken te gebruiken. "Dat is een voordeel van een klein merk: je kunt sneller reageren, de wegen zijn kort en de aantallen blijven overzichtelijk."

   oh ja, was even vergeten dat ax lover altijd het laatste woord moet hebben.
   
   Maar goed, in mijn beleving is er een wezenlijk verschil in het leveren van onderstellen aan saab die wil gaan concurreren tegen BMW en het leveren van 240.000 motoren aan een niche bouwer van politieauto's in de VS.
   
   Er zal nu zeker de reactie volgen dat BMW vroeger ook dieselmotoren heeft geleverd aan Opel voor in de Omega.

   Is het zo erg dat ik een discussie op gang probeer te houden?
   
   Of Saab uiteindelijk gebruik zal gaan maken van het toekomstige nieuwe MINI-platform is uiteraard nog lang niet zeker. Maar je moet niet vergeten dat de 'geruchten' momenteel om 2 zaken draait.
   
   - Levering 'MINI-platform' voor toekomstige Saab '9-2'
   - Levering (diesel)motoren voor 9-4X (en andere modellen?)
   
   Of er uiteindelijk een BMW/MINI platform gebruikt zal worden door Saab durf ik nu nog niet te zeggen, maar het gebruik van BMW/MINI motoren door Saab lijkt mij helemaal niet zo vreemd als sommige mensen hier denken.

   Wel interessant of Saab of BMW de geruchten aanwakkert. Meest waarschijnlijk is dat Saab de berichten naar buiten brengt.

   Spyker heeft toch een mooie zet gezet met Saab en had het met Spyker alleen toch niet gered? Als de fabriek weer op volle toeren begint te draaien en er weer omzet wordt gemaakt, dan is een koers rond de 3 euro toch een lachertje? Spyker komt nu een stuk serieuzer over dan eerst met 20 autootjes per jaar + met het feit dat ze dit kunnen (lees: dit hebben geflikt). Daarnaast hebben ze enorm veel goodwill gekweekt in Zweden en waardering/respect worldwide.... Dus de Zweden (en anderen) komen binnenkort hier hun Spykeraandelen kopen en anders wel in Stockholm als het daar genoteerd is. Een "correctie" naar de range 5 - 7,5 euro op middellange termijn lijkt mij niet onwaarschijnlijk.

   Om een herhaling van eerdere berichten te voorkomen, het os een huzarenstukje van VM om Saab te (kunnen) kopen, maar zie mijn eerdere reacties waarom ik er niet in geloof. Maar gun alle aandeelhouders succes met hun aandeel. Ook VM mag van mij door Saab praktisch miljardair worden. Spyker zonder saab nam niemend meer serieus.
   
   Echter de 9-5 vind ik weinig vernieuwend, op de 9-4x zit niemand te wachten en de 9-3 duurt te lang tot introductie. Voor een 9-2 is geen geld en mocht dat toch gevonden worden, heeft de concurrentie de markt al ongeveer verdeeld.
   
   Je vraag was of ik het knap vond, ja, dat wel, maar slim niet.
   
   Topic maar sluiten? Wordt herhaling van meningen.

   New Saab boss Victor Muller has voiced his concerns over the sale of Volvo by Ford to Chinese carmaker Geely.
   
   Muller, chief executive of Dutch supercar-maker Spyker, which acquired Saab from General Motors earlier this year, said he believes that the Volvo deal is still a long way from being finalised.
   
   He also fears that a weakened Volvo will have a negative impact on the supply chain in Scandinavia. “My opinion is that there is only a 50-50 chance of the deal with Geely going through and time is running out. If the deal is done what will happen to Volvo in the future?
   
   “We need two strong carmakers in Sweden to support big suppliers such as Autoliv. Saab and Volvo sit well together, they do not compete with each other.”
   
   Muller said there were likely to be many issues to resolve between Ford and Geely before the Volvo deal can be concluded, including such things as technology transfer.
   
   There is also opposition in Sweden to Volvo becoming Chinese-owned. Muller added: “One of the reasons Koenigsegg Automotive’s bid to buy Saab from GM fell through was because they wanted to bring Beijing Auto into the deal.”
   
   Ford and Geely said that the deal will not be finalised until later this year.
   
   Muller is also sceptical about full electric cars, although he said Saab will run an electric test fleet when it launches the new 9-3.
   
   “I lose sleep over electric cars – they are a contradiction in terms. They are only as good as the grid they get their electricity from.
   
   “In Stockholm EVs are truly zero emission because the country has nuclear and hydro-electric power stations. You can’t say the same for New York because the car might have an electric motor but 500 miles away someone is shovelling coal into the generating station.
   
   “We have to look at where the electricity comes from. There is a long way to go before EVs can be truly classed as zero emission. I see the future for now in hybrids, smaller, high performance internal combustion engines aided by electric solutions.”

    On June 17, 2009, a creditors’ meeting was held by the District Court of Vänersborg where Saab Automobile made a proposal for a composition with its creditors to write down by 75% unprioritized debt that had accrued prior to the company’s reorganization. The proposal was approved by the District Court and, in accordance with the terms of the composition, payment of the composition dividend was to be made on June 17, 2010. All creditors with an undisputed claim, and who have submitted their payment details in accordance with the letters sent to them by Saab Automobile, will be paid on this date.
    
    Jan Åke Jonsson, CEO of Saab Automobile, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank those loyal suppliers who have supported Saab over the past year – they have contributed significantly to the creation of an independent Saab.     If you’re hoping to pick up a new Saab 9-5 and you’re not already on a waiting list, you’ll probably have to keep hoping. This year Saab will deliver just 500 of its new 9-5 luxury sedans to dealers in the U.S. That means that each dealership will only get a handful of cars before the 2011 models arrive this Fall. And with the car originally announced back at the Frankfurt Auto Show last September, dealers have had a long time to build up waiting lists from the notoriously loyal Saab customers.
    
    Initially, all Saab 9-5’s will be high-priced Aero models, costing $49,990 – a price that reflects Saab’s ambition to take on traditional German luxury sedans like the Mercedes E-Class and Audi A6.
    
    The 9-5 Aero features a 300 horsepower 2.8L twin-turbo V6, all-wheel drive and the quintessential air-conditioned gearbox. Other high tech options include a heads-up display, Harmon/Kardon stereo and a lane-departure warning system.
    
    The 9-5 Aero will eventually be joined by an entry-level model featuring a 2.0L four-cylinder turbo engine and will start at “under $40,000″ according to Saab.

    US is grootste markt voor Saab en die krijgen 500 auto's geleverd. Hoe kan je dan in vredesnaam hoog houden dat je denkt 50.000 auto's te verkopen dit jaar. De groei moet van de 9-5 komen, de 9-3 is antiek en is dringend aan vervanging toe daar zit geen groei in.

    Vanwaar de wrok? Bij Saab ging de stekker eruit! En nu starten ze door met nieuw elan. Dat gebeurt zorgvuldig, dat gebeurt goed gestructureerd... en dat kost tijd, kost energie! En naast Saab ook Spyker die nu via een veel groter distributie (en marketing-)kanaal kunnen promoten en afzetten + synergetische voordelen bij productie Spyker oa met inkoop en ontwikkeling + de naamsbekendheid van de overname an sich.
    
    "In my opninion" knap, het getuigt van lef, ondernemingszin.... een potentiele star.....
    
    4 euri binnen 2 maanden en later dit jaar / begin 2011 richting 7,5 a 10, mark my words ;-) .

    De bodies voor de nieuwe 9-5 worden nu dus nog gemaakt door Opel in Duitsland en via een omslachtige weg naar Zweden gestuurd. Op zich niet zo heel erg groot 'probleem', maar die machines etc die gebruikt worden moeten natuurlijk wel stopgezet, afgebroken, verscheept en weer opgebouwd worden. En iets zegt mij dat je zoiets niet in een weekendje doet.
    
    Het zal ongetwijfeld een week of 2 in beslag nemen. In die tijd kunnen er dus geen bodies gemaakt worden. Uiteraard zullen ze wel proberen om een 'voorraadje' op te bouwen, maar het is natuurlijk maar de vraag of dat lukt.

    BILBAO, Spain (Reuters) – Spyker Cars NV wants to secure a platform-sharing partner for Saab's planned new 92 small car before deciding how to fund the project, and hopes to decide on a partner by year-end, CEO Victor Muller said.
    
    Niche Dutch carmaker Spyker took over Sweden's Saab from General Motors Co. earlier this year and is working to revive the flagging brand.
    
    Under GM, Saab's sales slumped to around 40,000 cars last year from around 130,000 five years ago.
    
    Muller said that "in a perfect world" the new 92 small car will compete with the cars such as Audi's A1 and BMW AG's Mini and would be launched in 2013.
    
    "We are still in the middle of discussions with potential platform-sharing partners, and we haven't got the funding in place, so those are two massive variables that need to be answered," Muller said in an interview on the sidelines of the Automotive News Europe Congress in Bilbao.
    
    The company is in talks with several partners and should make a decision by year-end, Muller said, declining to comment on the identities of the other carmakers.
    
    Swedish daily newspaper Dagens Industri reported earlier this month that the two companies were in talks over sharing engine and transmission technology.
    
    Muller said he had not yet decided on how the project would be financed.
    
    "There are many ways to skin that cat. We don't want to do massive share issues as that's very unattractive," he said. Raising the several hundred million dollars likely needed through a share issue would dilute existing shareholders' shares too much, he explained.
    
    "If it would be a good business model for the company you could consider taking on debt, but it's way too early to start thinking about that structure," he said.
    
    "Clearly we're not very keen on loading ourselves with debt," Muller said.
    
    Muller said he hoped the company would be cash positive by the end of 2011.
    
    Asked if Saab would consider jointly developing the platform itself with its new partner, Muller replied: "That's not unthinkable ... Then you would probably be looking more at a 2014 launch," Muller said.
    
    Dual listing
    
    Spyker is also planning a dual listing -- it is already listed in Amsterdam -- but this is not in order to raise cash for the 92, Muller said.
    
    The company has chosen Stockholm for the dual listing because of its good reputation as a market for engineering companies and also to strengthen the company's Swedish identity, Muller said: "We want to make the brand as Swedish as we can."
    
    It is talking to the Swedish stock exchange about what is needed for a listing, he said. "If we do it, it's going to be done this year," Muller said.
    
    Making Saabs more "Saabish"
    
    Referring to the appointment of designer Jason Castriota, formerly of Fiat's prestigious sports car unit Ferrari, Muller said Castriota had been the only person he considered.
    
    "I had my eye on him and him only. I didn't talk to anyone else," Muller said.
    
    "The designs I saw didn't meet my expectations. I thought the car needed to be bolder, more aerodynamically inspired, more Saabish."
    
    Referring to the 9-4 X crossover that will go on sale in April, Muller said Saab had lost customers, despite their inherent loyalty to the brand, because they lacked the variety of other carmakers offering options such as four-wheel drives and crossovers.
    
    "It's not easy to make a Saab customer leave," Muller said, adding, "Saab doesn't need any new customers, it only needs its old customers back."

    BILBAO, Spain -- Saab could build cars in China if its annual volume in the market hits 10,000 units, Victor Muller, chairman of the Swedish brand, said.
    
    "We hope to be selling 10,000 cars in China in the next three years," Muller told the Automotive News Europe Congress. "If that happens, we will talk to local manufacturers about production."
    
    Muller also told the Congress that Saab will announce new distribution arrangements in China in the next few months.
    
    Muller's Spyker Cars, a Dutch maker of luxury sports cars, bought Saab from General Motors Co. earlier this year.
    
    Muller said he expects Saab to be "cash positive" at the end of 2011 "if nothing strange happens in the world or in the auto business."
    
    He said that by 2012 Saab will have a much lower break even point than under previous owners GM at 85,000 annual unit sales, adding that it "would not be presumptuous" to expect the brand to achieve a volume of 125,000 in that year.
    
    "Saab sold 98,000 cars globally in 2008. In two years we will have new products - the 9-5, 9-4X crossover and a new 9-3, so sales will bounce back," Muller said.
