Welcome to the Before the Bell Newsletter.

Stock index futures are pointing to a higher open, with Citigroup gaining on a report banks are planning to sell assets to shore up capital.

The Wall Street Journal said European and U.S. banks are considering sales of everything from branches to entire units in a nod to crunch times ahead.

Stocks look set to rebound from Thursday's sell-off, which was prompted by weak economic news and fears of global unrest following the assassination of Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto.

U.S. Treasury debt trade is likely to be choppy again in thin volume with little in the way of significant data outside of new home sales and a reading on Midwest manufacturing. Trading is expected to be thin after the Christmas holiday earlier this week, with the few traders in their offices likely continuing to look at the stock market for direction.

November new home sales are generally expected to have fallen. The National Association of Purchasing Management-Chicago will release its business barometer for December, which analysts also expect to dip.

The dollar was lower while the yen rose broadly as weak U.S. data and uncertainty after Bhutto's assassination prompted investors to dump risky positions such as carry trades.

The dollar hit two-week lows against the euro and Swiss franc after Thursday's durable goods report was taken by investors as boosting the case for more interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve next year.

Oil was higher for a fifth day around $97 a barrel, within sight of its record high of $99.29 after U.S. crude stocks fell more sharply than expected, and geopolitical tensions mounted in Pakistan and Iraq.

    Have a great weekend
