Now Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, is playing havoc with the currency markets.
Her scepticism about a possible deal - again, this could just be brinkmanship - has hit the euro hard.
She has compared Greece unfavourably with other bailed-out nations that "took their chance" to implement reforms.
“Greece has received unprecedented solidarity over the last five years,” she said. “The basic principle still applies: help in return for reforms.”
But crucially, she's also seemed sceptical of the aforementioned €10bn offered reported by Die Ziet. She only knows of an existing offer from Greek creditors, and not of any new proposal.
